CBD Melbourne: Is fashion festival slip showing?

It's billed as the high point of the local fash pack's annual calendar, but it appears Melbourne Fashion Week may be struggling to maintain its sparkle.

And in the year it celebrates its 25th anniversary.

This year's Melbourne City Council event has promised to bring "the best of Australian fashion" to consumers, with a week of runways from August 28 and a ticket schedule charging up to $285 for front row seats and entry to the "Premium VIP lounge", which includes champagne, canapes and a gift bag.

But there's a conspicuous absence from the line-up.

Department store David Jones has opted out of this year's event.
