Shock victory: Sydney beats Melbourne as sporting city

Melbourne’s self-appointed title as the sporting capital of the world has been usurped by London, according to a survey that actually rates Sydney ahead of Melbourne in a global list of 50 cities.

London, the host of the 2012 Summer Olympics, came in at No.1 in the 2019 Ranking of Sports Cities by BCW Sports, who describe themselves as “one of the world’s largest full service global communications agencies.”

“Regardless of what one survey may say, there is no better place than Melbourne for sports fans year-round.”

However, unless Lord Mayor Capp, who was the first female board member of Collingwood, can make her AFL team as well known world wide as Real Madrid and Manchester United, Melbourne’s boast as sports capital of the known galaxy is merely a self aggrandising one.

Coates, ever the Olympian, attributed Sydney’s superior ranking to hosting the 2000 Games.

“Melbourne hosts many international events but the memory of the most recent Olympic Games in Australia is still clear in the minds of many around the world,” he said. Graciously.
