The owner of a plumbing business in Melbourne's south-east has been found not guilty of attempting to murder a former special operations police officer 18 months ago. The body of Dean Alan McGrath, 41, was found at the small Mordialloc plumbing factory owned by David Grierson on May 19, 2017.After a week of deliberating, the jury returned today to find Mr Grierson, 46, not guilty of attempted murder.The ABC can now reveal McGrath was a former Victorian police officer in the special operations division.He was working for his brother's construction company at the time of his death.The court heard McGrath had entered the factory about 7:00pm on May 17, 2017, armed with a sawn-off shotgun and wearing sunglasses, a hooded top and a scarf over his face.He wanted drugs and money from Mr Grierson, who was not at the factory at the time.When Mr Grierson returned to the factory a short time later, McGrath hit him with the butt of the gun and stomped on him as he lay on the ground.McGrath found drugs and money, but was not satisfied, the court heard."I know you've got more, you've got thousands," McGrath is said to have told Mr Grierson.The court heard McGrath then put down the gun, picked up a stone statue and walked towards Mr Grierson.
