When expectant mothers suffer nausea triggered by certain smells, the solution is usually to avoid the source of the offending odour. For artist Elizabeth Gower, it wasn't so straightforward.
Gower had been chosen to paint a Melbourne tram in 1989 as part of the city's pioneering Transporting Art program, and faced a month of dealing with the pungent aroma of enamel paints as she toiled in the Preston tram workshops.
"She was newly pregnant and the paint fumes made her nauseous and dizzy, so she couldn't actually paint the tram," says Russell Jones, of the Melbourne Tram Museum.
